How to Grade Retro Game Condition Like a Pro

RetroSwap Team·March 28, 2025·6 min read

Consistent Grading = Customer Trust

Customers return to stores they trust. Consistent, honest grading builds that trust and reduces returns.

Grading Cartridge-Based Games

Label Condition

  • Check for tears, fading, sticker residue, and marker writing
  • Sun-faded labels drop condition by at least one grade

Cart Shell

  • Look for cracks, discoloration, and missing screws
  • Check pin connector for corrosion or bent pins

Functionality

  • Always test before grading
  • Check save batteries on games that use them (SNES RPGs, Game Boy titles)

Grading Disc-Based Games

Disc Surface

  • Hold at an angle under light to check for scratches
  • Deep scratches that catch a fingernail will likely affect playability
  • Resurfacing can improve condition but should be disclosed

Case and Manual

  • Check for cracks in jewel cases or DVD cases
  • Manual condition matters — water damage and missing pages reduce value

Photography Tips

Take clear, well-lit photos of:

  1. Front label/cover
  2. Back of cart/disc
  3. Any damage or notable wear
  4. Box and manual (if included)

Good photos speed up AI grading and give customers confidence in your listings.

Standardize grading across your whole team

Create repeatable grading workflows that reduce returns and customer disputes.
